If I weren’t already firmly attached to my Christian beliefs ~ if I didn’t completely and wholeheartedly believe that the God of the Bible is the One True God ~ I would choose to be a Buddhist.

Many, many years ago, I was watching TLC’s “A Baby Story” on television, and that day’s featured story had a woman who was a practicing Buddhist. Every morning, when she got up, she meditated before her shrine of the Buddha, lighting incense, and being present before her god.

And this image has always stayed with me. What struck me most, in watching this, was this woman’s utter devotion to her god and her faith. Most Christians I know (including myself, unfortunately) are not even close to being that devoted in their faith.

I’m not saying that I think Christians should take up sitting before a shrine, etc. (mind you, I’ve considered mediation, before). But, we could definitely find other ways to outwardly express our faith ~ and in ways that aren’t crazy, or way “out there” (no need to stand on a box on a street corner, yelling at everyone that they’re going to hell if they don’t repent!).

I still can’t get Shane Claiborne’s book, “The Irresistable Revolution“, out of my head (I even went so far as to order my own copy from Amazon, last week). If you want to see devoted Christ-followers, check out Shane and his gang. They are finding ways to live out their faith without being obnoxious. They are just quietly practicing how Jesus taught us to live.

I am a firm believer in the fact that God doesn’t make anything “one-size-fits-all”. Each person is unique, so each person’s tastes and such are also going to be unique. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another.

I’ve really given a lot of thought to the way Shane lives out his faith. He has made friends with the homeless, and he’s made a difference in his community. He and his friends even travelled out East to spend time with Mother Teresa and her work, at one point!

But that style doesn’t fit me. I’m a mother of two younger children, and can’t just go out and spend time on the streets. I have to find other ways to be Jesus to the world, and other ways to show my devotion to God Almighty.

What do you do to show your devotion to God?
